About Newtown, Powys
Newtown is situated in Mid Wales in the county of Powys and is around 13.6 miles south west from Welshpool and 28.8 miles east of Machynlleth. The River Severn runs through Newtown and provides a wonderful setting for this pretty market town.
Newtown is one of the largest towns in central Wales and is actually quite old as it was King Edward I who gave Roger De Montgomery a charter to create the town in 1279. The town grew on the flannel and textile industry which is very much part of its heritage and you can visit the Textile Museum here too. If you are interested in history then Dolforwyn castle is close and offers good views of the area and there is Gregynog Hall to explore which is over 800 years old and the estate has over 750 acres of land.
One of Newtowns most famous residents was Robert Owen, who was born here in 1771 and grew up to become a successful businessman and a social reformer with worldwide influence as well as being one of the founders of the Co-operative movement. Robert Owen returned to Newtown in later life and there is a museum dedicated to him in town.
Alongside the historical interests, Newtown has a contemporary art gallery that showcases national and international artists. The Oriel Davies Gallery is also free to visit.
Since the 13th century Newtown has been a key market place and somewhere to gather and trade. As the town grew so did the range of shops available and you can now find everything from leather shops and book stores, to deli's and organic health food shops. Other retailers include clothing and fashion shops, gorgeous gift stores, jewellery specialists, florists, cookware stores, furnishing shops, unique crafts, confectionery shops and even mystical and magical shops.
When you have exhausted yourself shopping you can stop and enjoy one of the many cafes, pubs and restaurants available for a well earned rest.
When you make your visit to Newtown be sure to pop in and visit Rainbow's End for a warm welcome and an amazing collection of clothing, accessories and gifts that we are sure you will adore. We are situated on Broad Street just down from the Robert Owen Museum and around a 7 minute walk from the train station.
The Newtown railway station has good connections to Welshpool and Shrewsbury in one direction and Machynlleth in the other. There is also a bus station that has local and national services including the National Express service between London and Aberystwyth. If you are driving then the main road is the A483 from Welshpool or the A489 and A470 to Machynlleth and there are several pay and display car parks available in Newtown with the main ones being Shortbridge Street and Back Lane
